Kim Nam Joon, or RM, the leader of the popular K-pop boy band BTS, has been chastised by netizens for allegedly encouraging and supporting Islamophobia.

The saga began when RM posted a photo from his Spotify playlist on Instagram, confirming that he is a fan of Frank Ocean.

Though nothing appears to be wrong on the surface, Ocean’s song Bad Religion is what put RM on the map.

Bad Religion was released as part of Frank Ocean’s debut studio album, Channel Orange, in 2012. The words in this song that are insulting to Muslims are those that include an Arabic phrase that Muslims use to worship or remember God. Ocean uses the term ‘Allahu Akbar’ twice in the song, which many Muslims would find offensive. “He said ‘Allahu Akbar,’ and I said, ‘Don’t curse me,'” the lyrics say.

The song’s inflammatory and Islamophobic lyrics irritated RM’s Muslim fans, who sought an apology for hurting their feelings.

Fans of the K-pop idol reacted to Twitter, where the hashtag ‘RM, apologize to Muslims’ quickly became trending.
