Parts of the southern United States have already seen extremely high temperatures in the last week. Temperatures in El Paso, Texas, have been in the triple digits for 27 days in a row.
This extreme weather is predicted to last over the weekend, with over 175 million people in the United States under excessive heat warnings and advisories until at least Saturday afternoon.
The midday heat index in many regions soared well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
Major cities such as Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia have created cooling centres in public libraries and community centres to assist those who are unable to escape the heat.
Recognizing the dangers of excessive heat, the city of Boston declared a heat emergency and would give water to anyone in need through street outreach teams.
City officials and forecasts are advising residents to avoid the hot weather, particularly those who work or participate in outdoor activities, the elderly, youngsters, and those suffering from chronic ailments.
Staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned locations, limiting sun exposure, and checking on family and neighbors are also recommendations from the NWS.
In reaction to the extreme heat, Philadelphia extended public pool and spray ground hours, while New York City issued a social media public service advertisement encouraging pet owners to keep their pets hydrated.
Many sections of the world are predicted to experience heatwaves throughout August.
Temperatures exceeded the 20th-century normal for the 47th consecutive June and the 532nd consecutive month, according to the weather service.
The United States had the hottest June on record since 1850 last month.
