Issue of Gujjar Nala encroachment

Dear Editor,

I would like to draw the attention of the authorities toward the worsening condition of the poor people due to the Gujjar Nala encroachment.

In order to widen the Gujjar Canal, various institutions of the Sindh government conducted an operation to end the encroachment of the Gujjar Nala. Due to the actions of the government, the residents of Gujarnala presented their case in the Sindh High Court and finally, the matter reached the Supreme Court and the Sindh government took the position that the width of the drain is absolutely necessary to save the citizens from the difficulties faced during the rains.

The government also said that the victims will be given a rent of 15 thousand per month for two years and will also be given an alternative. The Supreme Court of Pakistan, after hearing the government’s position, on 14- 6- 2021, ordered the Sindh government to pay rent of Rs 15,000 or Rs 360,000 for 2 years to all the victims of the demolished houses and to provide alternative house but the Supreme Court of Pakistan expressed its strong displeasure on the government’s failure to implement this order and after that on 22-9-2021 directly to the Chief Minister of Sindh, the houses were demolished.

All the victims were asked to give a fully equipped alternative home within one year. The standard of which has already expired on 22-9- 2022, but the Sindh government has not yet ensured the implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which is very regrettable. They should be able to live like a normal citizen and the Sindh government is requested to change their view on these poor people.

Thank you
Anoosha Muhammad Arshad
