ECP restrains PM from visiting Lower Dir

In light of the upcoming second phase of local body elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on March 27, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has barred Prime Minister Imran Khan from visiting Lower Dir.

According to sources, the main election organising body issued a notification on Monday prohibiting the premier from hosting a rally in the K-P district on Thursday.

Lower Dir Election Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Tanoli has given a directive to his deputy, requesting that he take adequate measures to prevent political gatherings at a critical point in the election.

The members of the constituency will exercise their right to vote, according to the statement, which also emphasises that the premier will not be able to visit the constituency until the authority has released a schedule for the next elections.

The ECP stated that it would be impossible to announce any development project or inauguration after the timetable was released, citing Election Rules 233 and 234.

In the meantime, K-P Election Commissioner Muhammad Raziq has written to the secretaries of the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies to inform them of the efforts being taken to establish a code of behaviour during the elections.

It requested that MPs avoid going to the constituencies where the elections will be held.

It’s worth noting that Jamaat-e-Islami had already indicated that it will convene an all-party conference and begin a full-fledged protest campaign against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s planned visit and gathering.
