Government decides to table resolution in parliament against SC

The government has decided to table a resolution in the National Assembly today, Thursday, challenging the Supreme Court’s decision in the election delay case.

Following the country’s top court’s declaration that ECP’s decision to delay the elections was “unconstitutional,” the ruling alliance members decided on the course of action as Premier Shehbaz Sharif presided over a meeting with allies to map out the future course of action regarding the constitutional and legal aspects.

Speaking to the PDM alliance, Prime Minister said that the ruling that further exacerbated the already-existing legal and political crises was making a mockery of the Constitution and the law.

The prime minister claimed that the so-called 4-3 ruling of the supreme court was invalid because Justice Mansoor and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, two Supreme Court justices, had noted that the suo motu case had been dismissed by 4-3.

Shehbaz rued that a six-member bench recalled the interim order authored by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, wherein postponement of suo motu cases was ordered till tweaks were made.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the Punjab elections in accordance with the court’s instructions, despite the government’s opposition to the high court’s decision.

Earlier, the Pakistani Supreme Court declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to postpone the Punjab assembly elections until October 8 as illegal and unconstitutional and has therefore revoked it. Elections in Punjab will now be held on May 14.
