Factcheck: Is Mira Murati Indian? The woman behind ChatGPT

It is said that Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at OpenAI, the company that created the ChatGPT chatbot powered by artificial intelligence, has connections in India. Her parents are of Indian descent, according to numerous media reports.

However, a quick online search reveals that Murati is an Albanian surname, and some well-known individuals with the surname include football players Agim Murati, Advin Murati, Albanian actress Eva Murati, and politician and economist Hekuran Murati.

Mira Murati, 35, was born in San Francisco in 1988 and was raised in the US.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Mira Murati completed her Bachelor of Engineering (BE) Mechanical from Dartmouth College.

She started her career as a Summer Analyst at Goldman Sachs and among notable assignments, was the senior product manager, of Model X at Tesla between 2013-16.

Mira Murati became the Chief Technology Officer of Open AI, the California-based research and deployment company that created ChatGPT, in June 2018 after joining Open AI as VP, of Applied AI, and Partnerships.

“AI can be misused, or it can be used by bad actors. So, then there are questions about how you govern the use of this technology globally. How do you govern the use of AI in a way that’s aligned with human values?” she had said in an interview with Times Magazine.
According to its official website, ChatGPT, released in November 2022, is an advanced AI chatbot ‘trained by OpenAI which interacts in a conversational way’.
According to the website, the dialogue with ChatGPT makes it possible for the bot to ‘answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests’.
