PM launches Pakistan’s first-ever National Security Policy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan introduced the public version of Pakistan’s first National Security Policy (NSP) 2022-2026 on Friday.

“Inclusive growth was unavoidable for national security,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said at the NSP inauguration in Islamabad. The launching event was attended by federal ministers, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, all service chiefs, ambassadors, and senior civil and military officers.

“Inclusive growth involves uplifting not only the underprivileged, but also the underserved communities… In such a circumstance, every ordinary citizen becomes a shareholder in the state’s protection. “The greatest security is when people march behind the state to defend it,” Prime Minister Imran stated.

“Any national security strategy must prioritise national cohesiveness and people’s wealth while ensuring equal access to fundamental rights and social equality.”

The premier went on to say that if the country is to reach its greatest potential, it must support delivery-based good government.

The prime minister, who had earlier signed the agreement, praised the National Security Division for developing a consensus-based policy and defining national security in the “proper” way.

The policy establishes a citizen-centered framework that prioritises economic security and a secure and economically resilient Pakistan.

Multiple consultations with official stakeholders were held during the policy’s development, as well as feedback from over 600 people, including national security experts.

“NSP would also assist in correcting the dimension and assisting the entire government apparatus in moving in the same direction in order to achieve national security and stability,” the premier stated.

Imran also praised the military forces for safeguarding the people during the fight on terror by making enormous sacrifices that demonstrated their bravery and professionalism.

“Given the risks we confront in the region, as well as the growing menace of hybrid warfare,” he says, “they will continue to gain even more support and importance.”

Dr. Moeed Yusuf, the National Security Adviser, gave a brief overview of the National Security Policy vision and thanked the Prime Minister and other officials for their unwavering support.

The National Security Policy, according to Moeed, has taken a broad view of national security because both traditional and non-traditional challenges have an impact on our security.

“While the National Security Policy is centred on economic security, geo-strategic and geo-political imperatives also play a key role in bolstering Pakistan’s security and status in the world,” he said.
