3 killed and 5 injured in Michigan State University shooting. Three people were killed and five others were injured after a shooter opened fire on Monday night at Michigan State University’s main campus. After an hour-long manhunt, the suspect was found dead, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to police.
More than five hours after the bloodshed started on the expansive East Lansing campus, some 90 miles northwest of Detroit, police said at an early morning news briefing that the 43-year-old gunman had no known link with the university and that his motive remained a mystery.
The exact sequence of events is still unclear. Still, according to Chris Rozman, acting deputy chief of the university police, shots were fired in two different locations: the Berkey Hall academic building and the Michigan State University (MSU) Union building.
Rozman informed the media during the televised briefing that victims were discovered at both places after police swarmed the campus in response to the gunfire, which started just after 8 o’clock.
Adding that the institution was not aware of any threats made to the school prior to Monday’s massacre, Rozman stated that authorities had no information regarding the reason.
Rozman reported that five victims—all of whom were described as being in critical condition—were transported to a hospital in the adjacent city of Lansing, the seat of the state, and three of them died. One victim was at the MSU Union, while the other two were at Berkey Hall.
Officials refused to provide any details about the victims, some of whose identities and relationships to the university were still being determined, Rozman said.
The name and other information about the suspect were not immediately released, and police said they remained baffled by what precipitated the shooting.
“We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight,” Rozman told reporters.
The shooter was confirmed dead, from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot roughly four hours after the bloodshed had started, said by Rozman.
“There is no longer a threat to campus. We believe there to be only one suspect in this incident,” he said.
Rozman also said the suspect “was contacted by law enforcement off campus” at one point, adding, “that scene is being investigated as a crime scene.”
3 killed and 5 injured in Michigan State University shooting but it was unclear whether the shooter committed suicide before being confronted by authorities or whether he was found dead afterwards.
A little over an hour prior, MSU police had made available two still pictures of the suspect taken from surveillance footage. In the pictures, the suspect is seen entering a building, climbing a short flight of stairs, and exiting while donning a jacket, baseball cap, and a black mask covering his lower face. In one hand, he held what seemed to be a pistol.
Authorities had instructed East Lansing’s students, teachers, and people in nearby off-campus neighbourhoods to “shelter in place” during the manhunt. Once the suspect’s demise was established, the alert was withdrawn.
