Death toll from liquor rises to 23

HYDERABAD: The unconfirmed death toll from moonshine consumption in Hyderabad’s Tandojam and Tando Allahyar districts has risen to 23, with four further deaths in Hyderabad and two in Tando Allahyar. Only five deaths have been confirmed by the police in each of the two areas.

Moonshine is said to have killed 16 people in Hyderabad and seven persons in Tando Allahyar. Neelo Kolhi’s brother, Narsingh Kolhi, told the media that his brother had consumed illegal whiskey before becoming seriously ill and dying on Thursday.

He requested that “the authorities take action and arrest the perpetrators who are trading these deadly poisons.” The family of the majority of the other victims have chosen to remain silent.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police claim to have apprehended five people selling home-brewed liqueur. Sahil Shah, Najaf Shah, Saif Ali Shah, Abbass Shah, and Suhail Shah, according to a police spokeswoman. Hashim Shah and Jani Shah, two of their collaborators, allegedly escaped during a police search in Tandojam where they were illegally making liquor.

The offenders were detained and charged in two different FIRs based on the state’s case. Despite this, the two suspects, Qaim Magsi and Bachal Magsi, who were named in the FIR for allegedly supplying the booze that led to the murders are still on the loose.
