Book Review: Brida by Paulo Coelho

Life without any purpose is like the sky without clouds, the flowers without smell, and the colors without shades. The purpose in life makes life beautiful and decorated with some adorable lights. We all need some purpose to live because without purpose we are just passing life not living.

It is the same case with the girl Brida who does not have any purpose in her life. She just follows the boring routine and she is not satisfied with her life. She wants to find some purpose. She wants to get enjoyment, thrill, and excitement in her life by following her purpose.

The story is about a beautiful young girl. Brida is the main character whose journey starts with knowledge; the main aim of her life after so many hurdles. At first, she is confused about her life and wants to search for a purpose in life. At last, she wants to use herself in the searching of knowledge; the greatest if the great purpose ever. She starts her journey to learn the art of magic.

On her way, she finds two traditions: the tradition of the sun and the tradition of the moon. She finds a person named Magus who teaches her how to overcome her fears. She is confused and fearful. He tells her to be confident in the way because there are a lot of difficulties. By facing them with confidence, you will shine. The best knowledge or lesson on your way is to kill fear which is the strongest enemy of success.

She also meets a woman named Wicca who teaches her how to dance to the hidden music of the world. She learns how to dance with the wind and talk with the invisible world. She learns from her, the tradition of the moon and it lets her know about her soulmate.

Magus the teacher of Brida is also her soulmate but she is ignorant about it. Magus knows about his soulmate; Brida but could not tell her because he believes that his soulmate will come to him one day.

The act of sacrifice is explained. Magus sacrifices his love for his soulmate and the same did Brida. Being aware of his soulmate, Magus waits for her and the fruit of his patience gets when Brida comes towards him. It is mentioned: “When you were in love, you were capable of learning everything and of knowing things you had never dared even to think because love was the key to understanding all of the mysteries.”

The theme of love is greatly explained in the novel. The triangle of love between Brida, Magus, and Wicca shows their strong beliefs and love. Brida loves the man who is not her soulmate but later she realizes and leaves him to find her soulmate. The love of Magus for Brida is unique and unforgettable. He does not even tell her while she is in front of him. This also shows the quality of a faithful companion. The faithful companion or lover does not hinder the ways of his beloved. He can wait for the right time and helps to find and achieve the purpose.

At the end of the journey after facing many troubles she finds her soulmate. One of the beautiful lines: “That is what forest taught me. That you will never be mine, and that is why I will never lose you. You were my hope during my days of loneliness, my anxiety during moments of doubts, my certainty during moments of faith. Knowing that my Soulmate would come one day, I devoted myself to learning the Tradition of the Sun. Knowing that you existed was my one reason for continuing to live.”

“Soulmate” is the central quest of Brida. As far I have understood the term, it is the knitted souls who are born for each other. One spirit with two bodies. Finally, the soulmate will meet and become eternal.

Paulo Coelho’s novel theme is closely related to each other. In the Alchemist, the story revolves around the Personal Legend and the same in Brida. There are many temptations on the way but the main character finds what it wants to get by facing the difficulties. The main theme of his novels is the relation between nature and the language of the invisible world.

The novel is explaining the creativity of expression in the best way. The language is very simple but has deep meanings.

To sum up, we can say it is a story full of magic, mystery, mysticism, and love. It is the journey to find the soulmate, her personal legend or aim. The journey changes her life view. She finds her soulmate by taking risks. This tells us that life is about making mistakes. It was mistaken that set the world in motion. Though it is difficult to understand, it is full of thrill, passion, love, and spirituality.
