Shahrukh Jatoi caught living ‘lavish lifestyle’ in private hospital.
On the cover of medical treatment, Shahrukh Jatoi, the murder prisoner in the 2012 Shahzeb murder case, has been leading a “lavish life” on the upper floor of a little-known private hospital in Karachi’s Gizri district.
According to reports in the Sindh government’s home department, a senior official played a role in transporting the murder convict from prison to hospital under the pretext of medical treatment.
Shahrukh was transferred to Qamarul Islam Hospital a few months ago, which is purportedly rented by the province’s affluent Jatoi family.
The murder convict was returned to prison as soon as the news was leaked to the media.
When contacted by the media, Additional Chief Secretary Sindh Qazi Shahid Pervez said the Home Department has given no approval for Shahrukh Jatoi’s transfer or admittance from jail to hospital.
“If a prisoner’s health deteriorates, the jail administration has the authority to transport him to a hospital.”
However, based on the medical report of the jail medical officer, the prison administration chooses to move the ailing prisoner from the prison to the hospital.
“In light of the report, the decision to retain the sick prisoner in the hospital or return them to prison is made.”
Earlier in 2018, when he learned of Shahrukh’s VIP treatment, then-Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar expressed his disapproval and ordered the murder prisoner to be sent to the execution cell.
During an unexpected visit to Karachi’s Malir Jail, the former top judge discovered Shahrukh enjoying the prison’s B-class facilities.
After setting aside their acquittal by a trial court and the removal of anti-terrorism charges by the Sindh High Court, the apex court ordered Shahrukh and two co-accused in the Shahzeb murder case to be arrested in 2018.
