Pakistan reports highest number of cases of COVID-19 in two months

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported 1,085 COVID-19 cases in a single day, the largest number in two months, as officials warned of a fifth wave of infections and made plans to restrict the fast-spreading Omicron form.

According to the most recent numbers released by the Countrywide Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), a total of 46,585 samples were tested during this time period, with 1,085 proving to be positive, resulting in a national positivity rate of 2.32 percent, up from 1.8 percent yesterday.

The number of people who have died as a result of the pandemic has risen to 28,950 after five more people died from the virus in the last 24 hours.

There are currently 636 COVID-19 patients in critical care at hospitals around the country.

Meanwhile, Asad Umar, the head of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), denied the notion of a complete lockdown on Wednesday in light of the mounting Omicron cases of the Covid-19 type in the country.

Asad Umar stated in a statement that while Omicron cases are on the rise, the government has no plans to put the country on lockdown.

“There is no way to impose another complete lockdown,” he said, adding that the government is keeping a keen eye on the new Covid-19 Omicron type.
