Danish Kaneria mocks Shahid Afridi; reminds him of ball-tampering

Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistani leg-spinner, made fun of Shahid Afridi after the renowned all-rounder was named the interim chairman of the Pakistan senior men’s team selection committee. After Afridi became leader of the newly formed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under the direction of chairman Najam Sethi, Kaneria brought up Afridi’s infamous ball-tampering incident on social media.

Danish Kaneria made fun of Shahid Afridi’s promotion to a chief selector by posting a picture of him chewing a cricket ball during a T20I match against Australia in Perth in 2010.

Afridi was appointed as the interim chief selector in a 3-member panel headed by Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum. The committee headed by Afridi will initially be in charge of the 2-Test series against New Zealand at home, which got underway on Boxing Day.

Notably, Afridi was banned in 2010 for ball-tampering after he was caught on live TV biting a cricket ball. He was handed a 2-match suspension.

Afridi also admitted to ball-tampering, saying it was wrong but opined that most teams in the world were tamping with the ball.

“I shouldn’t have done it. It just happened. I was trying to help my bowlers and win a match, one match,” he had told Geo TV.

“There is no team in the world that doesn’t tamper with the ball. My methods were wrong. I am embarrassed, I shouldn’t have done it. I just wanted to win us a game but this was the wrong way to do it.”

Soon after taking charge, Afridi made changes to the squad that was announced for the New Zealand Tests ahead of his appointment. The Afridi-led committee picked Shahnawaz Dhani, Mir Hamza and Sajid Khan as additional players.

Notably, Pakistan picked left-arm pacer, Mir Hamza, to the XI and left out wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan for the 1st Test. Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed returned to the XI for the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi.
