The formal summary for the nomination of the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has allegedly been transmitted from General Headquarters (GHQ) to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) via the Ministry of Defense.
The overview lists the names of the five senior-most Lieutenant Generals, according to high-level sources. The top of the list is Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir Shah, a member of the Frontier Force Regiment who is currently the GHQ’s Quartermaster General (QMG).
Other names include Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza, who is currently the Commander of the X Corps in Rawalpindi and is a member of the Sindh Regiment. The list also includes Lt. Gen. Azhar Abbas, the Chief of General Staff (CGS) at GHQ and a member of the Baloch Regiment.
The National Defense University (NDU) Islamabad’s president, Lt. Gen. Nauman Mehmood, a member of the Baloch Regiment, has also been named to the shortlist.
Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, who is also a member of the Baloch Regiment and is currently the Commander of the XXXI Corps in Bahawalpur, is the most famous name on the list.
According to rumors, Prime Minister Shehbaz will choose the incoming COAS based on seniority. In this instance, Syed Asim Munir Shah will take over as COAS.
