The football associations of England and Wales are moving on with their plans to spread political messages at this year’s World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.

In spite of a FIFA request to “concentrate on football,” England and Wales indicated they will continue to pursue off-field problems in a joint statement with eight other European federations.

It is extraordinary for national teams and their athletes to use this sporting tournament to impose Western values on the Arab world, sparking a culture war at a contest that should typically be free of politics. Doha has been criticism for its track record on human rights issues, particularly for its handling of migrant labourers who helped build the competition’s infrastructure.

However, the criticism goes farther, with campaigners also criticising Qataris for their cultural and religious views. Bans on alcohol, premarital relationships, and Western LGBTQ culture are a few examples. Observers from the Muslim world, however, have been less enthralled by the anti-Qatar movement.

The World Cup is being held in the Middle East for the first time ever. The government of Qatar has pledged to create a friendly atmosphere for everyone. The FM of Doha reacted sharply to European “arrogance” and “double standards” this week.

Many anticipate that protests will be organised by activists both on and off the field throughout the competition, though it is unclear how Qatar would handle this.
