Bahrain has stated it will continue to develop its relationship with Israel as former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing allies prepare to establish the most extreme regime in the annals of Israeli apartheid. This is a step toward normalising relations with the regime.
“We will uphold our agreement with Israel, which is a condition of the Abraham Accords, and we anticipate that it will continue in that vein as we further develop our alliance,” Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said on Saturday.
Sheikh Khalid, whose nation is home to the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy, stated, “We would like to make sure that we don’t have to reach a day that we will face some deterioration of security in the region of any form.”
The elections, which began on Tuesday, are Israel’s fifth effort in only four years to break the political impasse that has paralysed Tel Aviv, despite intense political rifts within the political parties that make up the regime. In 2020, the Israeli regime mended relations with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates under Netanyahu’s administration.
Sheikh Isa Qassim, the head of the kingdom’s religious establishment, and the biggest opposition party in Bahrain, al-Wefaq, have consistently denounced the al-Khalifa dynasty’s attempt at normalisation.
During a formal ceremony presided over by former US president Donald Trump at the White House in September 2020, Netanyahu signed agreements with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani and the Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Later in the year, Sudan and Morocco followed suit and signed agreements for normalisation with the occupying regime that was mediated by the US. The UAE spearheaded the action, which has drawn significant condemnation from states and human rights organisations around the world, particularly in the Muslim world.
The agreements were denounced by Palestinians as a cruel “stab in the back” and a betrayal of their fight against Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian territory. The goal of the Palestinians is to establish an independent state with East al-Quds as its capital in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
