A lavish train ride to the biggest Buddhist temple in the world: Find out
The passengers on Indonesia’s newest luxury train, which is equipped with traditional Javanese batik tapestries, paintings, and books, are undoubtedly in agreement that the journey is just as essential as the destination.
Why else choose seven-hour train travel over a flight to Yogyakarta, the location of the famous UNESCO-listed Buddhist landmark Borobudur, in Indonesia?
The event, called The Journey Through Java by Train, is available to visitors who have reservations for a stay at Amanjiwo, an Aman Resorts facility in the province of Central Java.
Amanjiwo’s crew is hoping that the unusual train voyage would draw tourists from around the world to visit and learn more about Javanese culture now that Indonesia has relaxed its Covid-related travel restrictions for tourists who have received the vaccine.
According to Jann Hess, general manager of Amanjiwo, “The Journey Through Java by Train was launched during the epidemic and garnered favorable feedback from the home market.” Our goal going forward is to make this experience available to a larger global audience.
The new train is touted to be the first and only luxury rail experience of its sort in Indonesia and is operated by KAI Wisata, a high-end subsidiary of state rail operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia. It starts in the nation’s capital, Jakarta, and concludes in Yogyakarta, which is renowned for its Javanese arts and culture. It takes an hour to drive from there to Amanjiwo.
The presence of the resort’s resident anthropologist, who provides helpful insights about the area while traveling, is a key lure in addition to the stunning scenery. According to Hess, Java is seen as a mystical land whose culture has impacted other parts of Indonesia, such as Bali.
“During the train ride, anthropologist Patrick Vanhoebrouck will lecture on a variety of topics, including spirituality, architecture, and the arts. These topics include stories, myths, legends, and wisdom. By the time our visitors reach Amanjiwo to continue the exploration, this knowledge will foster curiosity and promote cultural appreciation and interaction.”
The Journey Through Java by Train can be rented by hotel guests as well as arranged as part of a two-night package at Amanjiwo.
