The 27th annual UN conference on the climate crisis will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in November. This comes after devastating floods in Pakistan, which have submerged a third of the nation, and a summer of record-breaking temperatures in the UK and throughout Europe.
Countries reaffirmed their commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels last year, but we are still far from being on track to achieve this goal – and the majority of the world’s largest economies have yet to carry out the commitments they made at Cop26 to make deeper emissions cuts.
With the emphasis of the world on the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the cost of living and energy concerns, our collective inaction on the climate crisis puts humanity at risk of committing “collective suicide.”
What promises could be made at Cop27, and will they be sufficient and kept? The speakers for the panel discussion will be revealed soon.
