India backlashes on Pakistan for raising Kashmir issue in UNGA
At an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on the Ukraine conflict, India criticized Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue. India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, said such statements from Islamabad deserved the “collective contempt” of the international community.
“It is not surprising that we have witnessed yet another attempt by a delegation to abuse this forum and make frivolous and unnecessary remarks against my country. Such statements deserve our collective disdain and sympathy for a mindset that repeatedly utters untruths,” Kamboj said.
“However, it’s important to get the balance right. The whole territory of Jammu and Kashmir is and always will be an integral and inalienable part of India, regardless of what the representative of Pakistan thinks or wishes. We call on Pakistan to stop transnational terrorism so that our citizens can enjoy their right to life and liberty,” Kamboj said.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, raised the issue of Kashmir in his speech to the special session of the United Nations General Assembly, saying that the right to self-determination under international law applies to peoples under foreign or colonial domination and to those who have not yet exercised the right to self-determination “as in the case of Jammu and Kashmir”.
He said the exercise of the right to self-determination should take place in an environment free from military occupation and under impartial auspices, preferably under the supervision of the United Nations.
