On Saturday, a senior Awami National Party (ANP) leader and candidate for Dera Ismail Khan city mayor was assassinated outside his home.
Unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle approached Umar Khatab Shirani outside his Model Town home.
Umar Khatab ran for mayor of DI Khan City in the local body elections, the first phase of which will be held on December 19. (Sunday).
Police have rushed to the crime scene and cordoned off the area as they search for the perpetrators.
The murder has sparked a debate about whether or not the election for mayor of the city will take place.
A day earlier, police and intelligence agencies conducted an intelligence-based operation against terrorists in Dera Ismail Khan’s Kalachi area.
Most-wanted terrorist Commander Tahir Zaman alias Basit was killed during the operation. Hand grenades and weapons were also recovered from his possession by security forces.
