Malala becomes an executive producer for “Joyland”
Nobel laureate: “I’m really happy to sponsor a movie that shows Pakistani artists are among the best in the world.”
Joyland, Pakistan’s official Oscar submission, now has Malala Yousafzai as a key player. The nation’s youngest Nobel laureate, who recently disclosed three collaborations with Apple Inc., will assume leadership as the movie’s executive producer, according to Variety.
Malala said in a statement that she is “very proud to sponsor a film that confirms Pakistani artists are among the best in global cinema” in a statement about the movie. Joyland “invite[s] us to open our eyes to the people closest to us — to view our family members and friends as they are, not coloured by our own expectations or societal bias,” the author said in a release.
Joyland has recently been shortlisted by Pakistan’s Oscars Selection Committee to represent the nation in the 95th Academy Awards’ category for “International Feature Film Award.” Joyland stars Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gillani, Salman Peerzada, Sohail Sameer, and Sania Saeed and was written and directed by Saim Sadiq. It was also produced by Apoorva Guru Charan, Sarmad Sultan Khoosat, and Lauren Mann.
We are excited to send one of our best this year to compete at the Academy Awards. We have hope because of Joyland that Pakistani film is at last making an impact on the global scene. The year we gain attention may possibly be this one! Thank you to the entire production crew. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the chair of the Pakistan Oscar Committee, said.
Given its breakthrough at Cannes and subsequent widespread appreciation, the Saim Sadiq-directed film is an appropriate choice. The movie took up the LGBTQ Palm award at Cannes in May for outstanding LGBT, queer, or feminist-themed film. The movie, which was the first ever competitive entry from Pakistan at the festival, also took home the Jury Prize in the category known as “Un Certain Regard,” which highlights up-and-coming, creative filmmakers.

In Joyland, a story about the sexual revolution, the youngest son of a patriarchal household is expected to have a boy with his wife. Instead, he decides to join an exotic dance company and develops feelings for the transgender director of the group.
Malala, on the other hand, has a contract with Apple Inc. for three movies. Malala told the outlet, “What I hope to bring to the table are the voices of women of colour, debut writers, and Muslim directors and writers.”
“I hope that we can hear from a variety of people and that we can confront some of the misconceptions that exist in our cultures. Additionally, I hope that the audience will find the story amusing, fall in love with the characters, and enjoy themselves to the fullest.”
