North Korea fires another missile, 6th in last 12 days

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles at its east coast after the United States repositioned an aircraft carrier in waters off the Korean Peninsula.

The rockets were fired at Japan on Thursday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Japanese government said.

The launch came immediately after the USS Ronald Reagan and its accompanying task force transferred to waters off the Korean Peninsula.

The launch was also followed by rare missile drills by South Korea and the United States east of North Korea.

Pyongyang sees these drills as rehearsals for an invasion of its territory. Thursday’s rocket launch was the sixth in 12 days.

“This is the sixth time in the short term since the end of September alone,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters. “This cannot be tolerated at all,” he added.

Pyongyang launched a medium-range ballistic missile (IRBM) in Japan on Tuesday.

The missile fell into the Pacific Ocean after flying “over and over” Japanese territory, triggering a warning to area residents to take cover and a temporary suspension to train operations there.
