A suicide attack on educational institute in Kabul left 19 dead

A suicide attack on an educational institute in the Afghan capital Kabul left 19 people dead and dozens injured, police said on Friday, but said there was no immediate responsibility for the attack.

Many people living in the western area where the blast occurred are Hazara, an ethnic minority that has been the target of previous attacks by the Islamic State militant group, among others.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said the attack also injured 27 people, revising the death toll slightly from the previously announced 29.

He said the attack took place at an educational institution where an entrance exam was taking place. Schools in Afghanistan are generally closed on Fridays. “The attack on civilian targets demonstrates the inhuman cruelty and lack of moral standards of the enemy,” he said, without specifying who he believed was behind the attack.

Since taking control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have stressed they are securing the nation after decades of war, but there have been a series of explosions in mosques and civilian areas these last months.

Teenage students were among 24 people killed in a suspected Islamic State attack on an education center in west Kabul in 2020.
