Ramkot Fort: A picturesque historic site

Ramkot Fort is located at the confluence of the Jhelum and Poonch rivers, on a steep cliff overlooking the emerald waters of Lake Mangla. Due to its distinctive architecture, Ramkot Fort differs from the forts built in the Kashmir region.

The history of Ramkot Fort is it is located on the bank of river Jhelum, was built during 16-17th AD by the Muslim rulers of Kashmir. Sikh Maharaja further fortified it. Ramkot Fort is located on the opposite side of the Mirpur town and one has to cross Mangla dam on boat to reach there.

Ramkot is identical in its architectural features to the forts of Mangla and Muzaffarabad and is believed to have been built in the same period.

To reach the fort, one had to take a boat from the Army Water Sports Club at the Mangla Dam, which would take nearly 20 minutes to reach the northern end of the reservoir. Here, you will find a gigantic fortress structure picturesquely situated at the top of the hill.

A short but steep climb leads to the fortress. This comfortable location must have been a strategic asset to this fortress in the past, but today it has become the reason for its isolation and its wild nature; Unlike other places on Lake Mangla, few tourists choose to head in this direction, probably due to the distance.
