The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has taken action regarding Imran Khan’s political speech at Lahore’s Government College University.
According to a notice issued on Tuesday, the HEC removed GCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Asghar Zaidi from the Vice-Chancellor Search Committee for hosting a political event on the premises.
Asghar Zaidi served on the search committees of Quaid-e-Azam University, International Islamic University, and Allama Iqbal Open University, according to HEC. Dr. Shoaib Mir has now replaced him on the search committee.
According to Federal Education Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, the GCU vice-chancellor will face severe punishment.
Governor of Punjab Balighur Rehman took note of Imran Khan’s political programme at the GCU. He expressed regret that the nation’s most prestigious educational institution has become a political arena. He added that such political activities have no place in universities.
Maryam Nawaz, leader of the PML-N, had previously tweeted her opposition to Imran Khan’s political rally at the GCU and demanded harsh action against the vice-chancellor.
