Low-caste Indian youngster beaten to death by teacher, according to family

Nikhit Kumar, according to his relatives, was given corporal punishment by his instructor at school just days before he was pronounced dead.

An Indian adolescent from the lowest caste of Hindus in India died on Monday, according to his family, after being struck with a stick by a teacher for making a spelling mistake in class, and police said they were looking into the claim.

Nikhit Kumar, 15, was given corporal punishment by his teacher on the campus of a private school, according to his family, and 19 days later, in the Auriya district of northern Uttar Pradesh, doctors proclaimed him dead.

Rishi Kumar, the boy’s uncle, claimed that the teacher physically assaulted his nephew at first before abusing him because he is a Dalit. The Dalit community is considered to be “untouchables” and is at the bottom of the Indian Hindu caste system.

Untouchability is forbidden in India, but despite this, Dalits continue to experience pervasive maltreatment throughout the nation, and any attempts they have made to advance socially have been viciously suppressed.

When we wanted financial recompense, the teacher—who is from an upper caste—killed Nikhit and then screamed casteist insults, Rishi Kumar told Reuters via phone.

The family had filed a criminal complaint, according to the police chief of the Auriya district, and a postmortem was being performed by medical professionals to determine the exact reason of the youth’s demise.

The district police chief, Charu Nigam, stated that “we are trying to trace the teacher as he has gone missing.”

In protest at the boy’s passing, Dalit family supporters, according to the police, flung stones at passing officers and a police van.

One of the earliest examples of rigid social stratification in the world is the caste system in India. The arrangement gives upper castes various privileges while suppressing lesser castes.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, there were 50,291 cases of crimes against Dalits in India in 2020, an increase of 9.4% from the 45,961 cases in 2019.
