Angelina Jolie reaches Pakistan to visit flood victims

Angelina Jolie, international humanitarian, has reached Pakistan to support communities affected by the devastating floods. Heavy rains and floods across the country affected 33 million people and flooded a third of the country.

Ms. Jolie is visiting in order to witness and understand the situation and to hear from those directly involved about their needs and steps to prevent such suffering in the future.

Ms. Jolie, who previously visited victims of the floods in Pakistan in 2010 and the earthquake in 2005, will visit the IRC relief operations and local organizations that help displaced people, including Afghan refugees.

Pakistan, which contributed only 1% to global carbon emissions, is also the second largest influx of refugees in the world, as its population has been hosting Afghan refugees for over 40 years.

Ms. Jolie will underscore the need for urgent support for the people of Pakistan and long-term solutions to address the multiplying crises of climate change, displaced people and continuing insecurity we are witnessing around the world.

Ms. Jolie will see with her own eyes how countries like Pakistan are paying the highest price for a crisis they did not create. The IRC also hopes that her visit will shed light on this issue and inspire the international community especially those countries that contribute the most to carbon emissions to act and provide urgent support to the countries hardest hit by the climate crisis.

In the words of Shabnam Baloch, Pakistan Country Director at IRC, said that “The climate crisis is destroying lives and futures in Pakistan, with serious consequences, especially for women and children. The resulting economic losses are likely to lead to food insecurity and increased violence against women and girls. We need immediate support to reach people in need and long-term investment to prevent climate change from destroying our collective future. With more rain expected in the coming months, we hope Angelina Jolie’s visit will help the world wake up and take action.”
