The University of Michigan announced the completion of a $490m deal with over 1,000 victims who claimed sexual assault by a former sports doctor.
Robert Anderson, the doctor, served as a physician for the university’s football team and other sports departments from 1966 until his retirement in 2003.
He passed away in 2008. The majority of the casualties were men.
According to the university, 98% of claimants approved of the settlement.
The claimants and their attorneys agreed on how the money would be divided, according to the statement.
“The University of Michigan extends its deepest apologies for the late Robert Anderson’s abuse. We hope that this settlement aids survivors in their rehabilitation journey,” a statement given by Paul Brown, chairman of the university’s governing board.
The university announced in January that the agreement, the result of years of discussions with victims’ attorneys, would resolve all accusations of abuse by Anderson.
As the University of Michigan wraps up the $490mm sexual abuse settlement, it said at the time that $460 million would be awarded to 1,050 claimants, with an additional $30m set aside for any unnamed victims who came forward by July 31, 2023.
