Massive earthquake rocked island state Taiwan
A massive earthquake rocked Taiwan on Sunday when a series of aftershocks hit the autonomous island off the east coast of China.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 7 kilometers near the city of Taitung on the southeastern coast, Taiwanese authorities reported.
A two-story residential building collapsed near the epicenter, according to a Taiwanese media report. The quake was felt on the north side of the island, in the capital Taipei.
After the Taiwan earthquake, the Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a warning for a tsunami up to 1 meter high that would reach several southern islands of Japan.
The agency said the first waves could reach Yonaguni Island, Japan’s westernmost island about 110 kilometers (70 miles) east of Taiwan, around 4:10 p.m. (0710 GMT) and then three neighboring islands. The islands are about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

Weather officials urged people in those areas to stay away from the coast. Taitung County in Taiwan was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Saturday evening and has been rocked by numerous aftershocks since.
