‘No Women fired from Gov Jobs’; Taliban respond to UN report

Kabul: Taliban authorities were accused of violating women rights to work in Afghanistan. On 13th Sep, Taliban hit back at the UN report saying that the report is completely baseless & that there are thousands of Afghan women who are serving in the country’s public sector.

However, a day after the United Nations report, the chief of staff at the ministry of labor & social affairs, Sharafuddin Sharaf, told AFP that huge number of women are being paid despite them not even working. This is so because there has not been proper set up in offices segregate the two genders. It is all so that women & men work separately.

“Our religion Islam does not allow men & women to work together”, added he. Talking about the United Nations report, it had clearly pointed out that the country has been regressive in terms of women rights ever since Taliban took over back in August. Sharafuddin Sharaf in return insisted that “not a single female employ has been fired”. Mr. Sharaf however could not give a fixed number of the fixed number of employed women in the country.

Apart from facts & figures, United Nations report & general world call outs, Afghan women alone have been reported several times to have protested over losing their jobs & wanting the right to work. The basic right which should have been given to them but Taliban took it away.

“Some women have only gone to their respective offices just once in a week to sign the attendance yet their salaries are given on time”, added he. It is also important to mention that he was meant to refer to the offices which were yet to segregate men-women spaces. “It is up to the Taliban government to decide when can women come to offices & when would that segregation be done.”

These comments came right after UN issued a report on women employment rate in Taliban led Government. The Afghan government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, called the report completely biased.

“There is no threat to the lives of Afghan women now & or nobody dishonors Afghan women”, added Zabihullah. It should also be noted that still most secondary schools for girls have reportedly been shut down & the women have also been ordered to constantly cover up their heads in public.
