NA Pakistan to Host 3rd IPU Regional Seminar on achieving SDGs

In an effort to raise awareness of the devastation caused by the ongoing floods and to raise awareness of the plight of those affected by the floods, the National Assembly of Pakistan is organizing the third Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Regional Seminar on Achieving Goals of sustainable development (SDG) for Asia-Pacific parliaments from 13 to 14 September in Islamabad.

The event will take place against the backdrop of the devastating rains, floods, and landslides that have affected over 33 million people in various parts of Pakistan; more than 1,100 people, including more than 350 children have lost their lives, and more than 1,600 people were injured, more than 287,000 homes have been completely and 662,000 partially destroyed, more than 735,000 cattle died and 2 million hectares of crops were damaged, as well as severe damage to the communication infrastructure have been observed.

This regional seminar aims to highlight the vulnerabilities of developing countries, particularly countries in the Asia-Pacific region, to the ever-increasing impacts of global climate change. Using this platform, the National Assembly of Pakistan aims to raise awareness among foreign parliamentarians to support climate change in the region by witnessing the intensity and scale of the climate catastrophe in Pakistan.

The two-day event will comprise various activities. Its opening session would be celebrated by Pakistani Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, welcoming addresses by the Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and a speech by the IPU Secretary General, Mr. Martin Chungong. The seminar will also include breakout sessions on “Implementing the SDGs in the Asia Pacific”, “Designing Inclusive Development”, “Promoting Quality Education and Decent Work for Youth”, “Ensuring Equitable Access to Health”, “Parliamentary Mechanism and Practices to Institutionalize the SDGs”, “Women at the Center of the Development Agenda”, Building Resilience to Safeguard Our Common Future.

The participants and representatives of the seminar would have the opportunity to see firsthand the incalculable loss of life and property of the ordinary citizens of Pakistan due to the devastating floods. In this context, the NA of Pakistan will also organize a visit of the participants to the areas and campuses affected by the floods. The above-mentioned seminar would be held at the National Assembly Hall to cut costs in light of the heavy blow to Pakistan’s economy from the devastating floods, the money saved would then be donated to clean up the floods affected. Once completed, the seminar should produce a well-coordinated and inclusive plan of action to meet the needs of those affected in this dark hour of need.
