The first solar-powered car in the area is made by Bilal Ahmad and runs entirely on solar power.
Bilal Ahmad, a math teacher in the capital of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), has spent the last 13 years persevering and working hard to create the first solar-electric vehicle in the area that can also be charged by electricity.
The 40-year-old Ahmad, whose photos and videos of the car went popular on social media last month, became an overnight star in the area.
Ahmad expressed astonishment that his product had gotten such a favourable reception and recognition from the people when speaking with Anadolu Agency at his Srinagar home.
In response to being dubbed “Elon Musk of Kashmir” when his solar-powered automobile went viral, he commented, “I never expected that my creation could create such great gestures from people.”
Ahmad was moved to tears in 2009 after reading an article warning that gasoline prices would skyrocket in the years to come, making it difficult for the typical individual to buy a car.
Then, Ahmad said, “I determined to create something that everyone could afford.”
Years of effort
Ahmad was keen to put his skills and knowledge to use after earning a degree in civil engineering in 2007 from a college in the Indian state of Bengaluru.
A solar automobile that the general public could buy was his dream project, and he started working on it two years later.
To better grasp how he may carry out his idea and make it a reality, he started by reading articles and watching videos on social media.
“For this project, I conducted extensive preparation and research. I made sure that anything I was doing was original and efficient “He said.
He then started reading and researching 1950s automobiles that were produced all around the world. Delorean, a pioneering engineer from Detroit, Michigan, who founded the automaker DMC, served as an inspiration to him.
However, Ahmad had to overcome many obstacles in order to finish his visionary proposal. He was discouraged by the cycles of violence, the scarcity of resources, and the financial challenges, but he persisted.
Ahmad remarked, “I anticipated there would be issues with the project when I started working on it, but I continued going with it.
In order to finish the project, he spent close to $18,000 and hired between 10 and 15 people.
Affordable
Ahmad has received praise from a variety of people, including former IIOJK chief minister Omar Abdullah and Indian industrialist and tech tycoon Anand Mahindra, who, after admiring his vehicle, offered to help Ahmad turn it into a fully functional model.
He claims that in contrast to other solar cars, which normally have two seats, his vehicle has four seats.
The front, top, and back of the automobile are covered in monocrystalline solar panels that are exposed to the sun in order to produce the most energy possible to power the vehicle. If there is less solar energy available, the car also has the benefit of charging via electricity.
As he drove it, he said, “This car is fully automatic and has gullwing doors to suit the space restrictions.”
Ahmad claimed that he met with Anand Mahindra’s team a few times to discuss his creation and that his current goal is to patent it as soon as possible so that ordinary people can purchase it.

“Your innovation is just a business model if it’s not for the benefit of everyone,’ I’m working toward the common good, which is my goal,” he declared.
