Serena Williams says goodbye to 27-year career after loosing US Open
After losing the US Open, Serena Williams said goodbye to her 27-year career in an emotional way.
After the 23-time major winner declared her career over, Australian Ajla Tomljanovic made history by defeating Serena Williams at the US Open for the final time.
Tomljanovic won 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 despite Serena and the raucous crowd trying to stop him.
Following two sets that failed to separate the two, Tomljanovic broke Serena early in the final and rode that momentum to a 5-1 lead. Ajla Tomljanovic came up against a typical Serena Williams, however, who used all of her tenacity to keep the match in hand while serving.
The American saved five match points during Tomljanovic’s lengthy service game, which lasted more than 14 minutes before she was finally defeated. The American, who benefited from the crowd’s encouragement when she pulled off an unlikely victory in the previous round, played with the crowd’s support.
Serena only mentioned this being her final tournament in passing, not even during the on-court interview.
Ons Jabeur, a fifth-seeded Tunisian, advanced to the fourth round of the US Open tournament by defeating hometown favourite Shelby Rogers with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wimbledon finalist struggled to find her rhythm in the first set, wasting many breakpoint opportunities. When it mattered most, the Tunisian rapidly took a 4-0 lead in the match, and the American quickly came back, only to make vital errors once more to hand Jabeur the victory.
Caroline Garcia, Alison Riske, Coco Gauff, Karolna Plková, and Danielle Collins also advanced to the next round.
As she waved goodbye and performed her trademark spin, the sound system blared Tina Turner’s smash hit “Simply The Best.”
After her performances this week, would Williams consider coming out? Williams answered, “I’m literally playing my way into this and getting better. This year, I ought to have started earlier. Although I doubt it, you never know.
