Pak-Afghan: Officials agree to bolster bilateral trade

Pakistani and Afghan officials met at the Turkham border on Thursday and agreed on a concerted effort to boost trade between the two countries.

Participants expressed satisfaction with the increase in the number of cross-border vehicles from 500 to 1,200. FC, NLC, FIA and police officers attended the meeting from the Pakistani side, while the Afghan delegation was headed by Border Patrol Commander Maulvi Khalid.

Pakistani officials during a meeting held at the Customs House and chaired by Additional Customs Commissioner Mohammad Taiyab said Pakistan had lifted tariffs imposed on onion and tomato imports from Afghanistan, as well as giving Afghan authorities the option of importing coal. They called for the abolition of export taxes imposed on.

In this regard, the Afghan side assured the Pakistani officials that they would forward their request to the Afghan Ministry of Commerce. The Afghan delegation demanded that dozens of trucks carrying fresh fruit from Afghanistan wait several days before entering Pakistan, adding that millions of rupees worth of fruit could be spoiled.

Pakistani officials have assured Afghan officials that they will remove the trucks as a priority. Afghan officials have thanked the Pakistani side for increasing the number of vehicles allowed into Pakistan from 500 to 1,200. Pakistan’s additional collection tax says vehicle movements will increase to 2,000 vehicles per day.

During the meeting, the Afghan authorities expressed their satisfaction that the measures taken by Customs and the FC have resulted in the complete elimination of 80% of child labor in the hope that it will be eliminated.

The Pakistani delegation called on the Afghan authorities to ensure that the concessions given to Afghan patients to enter Pakistan via Turkham were abused by elements involved in trafficking. They believed the Afghan authorities should prevent human trafficking and cooperate with the Pakistani authorities.
