The PTI won the Karachi NA-245 seat in a by-election held on Sunday after the death of Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who was elected on a PTI ticket in 2018. According to unofficial and preliminary results from all 263 polling stations released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI won by nearly 17,000 votes, with its candidate Mehmood Maulvi receiving 29,475 votes.
Mueed Anwar of the MQM-P came in second with 13,193 votes, followed by Muhammad Ahmed Raza of the TLP with 9,836 votes, and independent candidate Dr Farooq Sattar with 3,479 votes. The voter turnout remained stable at around 12%. The voting process began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 5 p.m. (Sunday). However, voting hours were extended by one hour at polling stations 55, 143, and 144.
The election commission set up 263 polling stations for the by-election, with 60 designated as sensitive and 203 designated as most sensitive. The by-elections featured candidates from the MQM-Pakistan, Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf, and Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).
Maulvi of the PTI, Mueed of the MQM-P, Syed Hafeezud Din of the PSP, Muhammad Ahmed Raza of the TLP, and Dr Farooq Sattar of the MQM Bahali Committee, who ran as an independent candidate, were among the major contenders for the seat. Syed Nadeem Haider was appointed as the returning officer for the NA-245 by-election by the ECP. In light of the results, the electoral commission also prohibited development projects and transfers of officials within the boundaries of the NA-245 constituency.
