On Wednesday, an Indian Army helicopter carrying Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and other Indian defence officials crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor, reportedly killing the general and eleven others.
The Indian news agency ANI reported that 14 persons were on board the chopper, including the Indian defence assistant, IAF pilots, and security commandos, in a tweet.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) verified the development in a tweet.
“An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident,” the statement continued.
The IAF, on the other hand, later deleted the tweet.
Two dead with 80 per cent burns were carried to a local hospital by residents, according to another tweet from ANI. “Only a few bodies can be spotted downward in the accident location. Sources say that efforts are being made to recover the bodies and verify IDs “ANI reported.
According to India Today, three persons were rescued from the wreckage, all of them were seriously injured. The injured have been relocated to the Wellington cantonment for medical attention.
CDS Bipin Rawat’s employees and family members were on board the Mi-series chopper with him when it crashed between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu, according to sources, according to ANI news agency.
Nearby military bases have initiated search and rescue operations.
