Sadr supporters planning for a longer sit-in at the Iraqi parliament

Muqtada al-Sadr’s supporters have set up tents and prepared for a sit-in at the Iraqi parliament in Baghdad, in a move that could prolong political standoff.

On Saturday, thousands of protestors surrounded the fortified Green Zone and occupied the vacant parliament building for the second time in a week. Among other things, they are demanding constitutional revisions and early elections.

In a tweet on Sunday, Al-Sadr claimed the sit-in was a fantastic opportunity to drastically question the political system, the constitution, and the elections, but he has not yet visited the location. He urged everyone in Iraq to join the “revolution,” suggesting the sit-in will probably continue for a long time.

Due to repeated failures in negotiations and the collective resignation of al-Sadr’s bloc in parliament, the nation still lacks a new administration nearly ten months after the elections.
