Sialkot Tragedy: 13 suspects remanded in transit by police

A court in Sialkot on Sunday granted the police one-day transit remand of 13 primary suspects held in connection with the lynching of a Sri Lankan citizen, The Asian Mirror reported.

The accused will appear in a Gujranwala anti-terrorism court (ATC) tomorrow (Monday).

Farhan Idrees, Sabur Butt, Talha Abdur Rehman, Imran, Taimur, Shoaib, Raheel, Usman, Shahzeb Ahmad, Nasir, Ihtesham, and Junaid are accused of murdering, inciting others to murder, and burning the body of Priyantha Diyawadana Kumara, a Sri Lankan man who was working as a manager at a sports goods manufacturing factory in Sialkot (Friday, December 3).

Earlier, the 13 men were brought before Civil Judge Zareef Ahmad in a high-security courtroom.

Hundreds of protesters at a Sialkot factory, almost all of whom were workers, surrounded their manager Kumara, accusing him of blasphemy.

The perpetrators would be prosecuted for the ‘barbarism,’ according to government representatives because the incident violated Islamic rules and beliefs.

The Punjab IG stated that they were “investigating the facts as well as the police response, to see whether there was any kind of delay,” and that the situation was “sensitive and unfortunate.” According to a Punjab government spokesperson, officials are seeking to gather CCTV footage in order to identify the perpetrators.

Several terrible video clips circulated on social media, showing a mob thrashing the prone victim while yelling anti-blasphemy chants.

Other footage showed his body on fire and the upturned wreckage of what was alleged to be his car. Many members of the mob made no attempt to conceal their identities, and some even took pictures in front of the charred body.
