After receiving a government complaint, video-sharing platform YouTube has banned Sidhu Moosewala’s latest tune, SYL, in India. Within three days of its release following Moosewala’s death, the song had received over 2.7 lakh views on YouTube.
“The content is not available on this country domain owing to a legal complaint from the government,” according to a YouTube notification.
SYL was trending at the top of the music category on YouTube. The song, however, is accessible to YuTube users outside of India.
On May 29, Moosewala was brutally murdered in the Mansa district, allegedly by Canada-based thug Goldy Brar. He had joined the Congress just before the assembly elections this year. He then ran for the Mansa assembly seat, but was defeated by AAP candidate Vijay Singla, who was later imprisoned on corruption charges.
YouTube has not stated whether the legal action was filed by the AAP government in Punjab or the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The release of Sikh political prisoners, as well as justice for 1984 victims, were key concerns emphasised in the SYL song.
“Each of you is the last hope for saving the Punjab river waters to prevent desertification of Punjab,” a note accompanying the video reads.
The video’s narration also refers to the killing of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, suggesting that Punjabis’ tolerance should not be stretched.
