US and Ukraine sign ‘historic’ 10-year security agreement.
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against the ongoing Russian invasion and to pave the way for its potential NATO membership, U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy have signed a historic 10-year bilateral security agreement.
The agreement, reached on the sidelines of the G7 conference in Italy, highlights the United States’ commitment to Ukraine, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November.
Biden: Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense
At a joint press conference with Zelenskiy, President Biden emphasized the long-term goal of enhancing Ukraine’s credible defense and deterrence capabilities.

Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Biden conveyed a united stance from the G7 nations: “You cannot wait us out. You cannot divide us.”
The G7 countries have also agreed to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan, backed by profits from frozen Russian assets.
This financial aid is intended to support Ukraine amidst the continuing conflict with Russia.
Zelenskiy Hails Agreement as Historic:
President Zelenskiy lauded the U.S.-Ukraine security agreement as a landmark deal.
He described it as a foundational framework for a sustained effort to modernize Ukraine’s outdated armed forces and a crucial step towards eventual NATO membership.

Despite Ukraine’s persistent pursuit of NATO membership, the alliance has yet to extend this status, which would trigger its collective defense obligations under Article Five.
Rapid Response Mechanism:
The agreement includes provisions for a rapid response in the event of an armed attack or threat against Ukraine.
High-level U.S. and Ukrainian officials will meet within 24 hours to discuss and determine necessary defense responses and additional support for Ukraine.
Commitment to Sovereignty and Defense Development:
