Explosives found 1km away from Adiala jail. A tense situation unfolded near Adiala Road in Gorakhpur, Rawalpindi, as local law enforcement discovered a suspicious bag containing an explosive device.

The alarming discovery occurred a mere kilometer away from the heavily guarded Adiala jail, where a hearing related to the high-profile cipher case was scheduled.

The police, responding swiftly, confirmed the presence of a potentially lethal explosive within the bag, weighing approximately 1,500 grams.

A specialized bomb disposal squad was summoned to the scene and effectively neutralized the device, averting a potential catastrophe.

Of notable concern is the proximity of this incident to Adiala jail, where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan, is currently detained in connection with the cipher case.

The presiding judge, Abual Hsanat Zulqarnain, altered his travel route to ensure safe access to the prison complex following the discovery and subsequent defusing of the explosive.

This occurrence underscores the broader security landscape in Pakistan, where threats from both internal and external terror outfits, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), loom large.

A recent report released by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) highlighted a concerning trend, indicating a significant toll on security personnel. The report revealed that, within the first nine months of 2023, 386 security personnel lost their lives, marking an eight-year high in casualties.

As explosives were found 1km away from Adiala jail, the ongoing security challenges were further exemplified by the grim statistics shared in the report’s third-quarter analysis.

It detailed a total of 190 terror-related incidents and counter-terror operations, resulting in the loss of 445 lives and injuries to 440 individuals.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan emerged as the epicenters of violence, accounting for a substantial 94% of fatalities and 89% of all attacks recorded during the mentioned period. This alarming trend highlights the pressing need for heightened security measures in these regions.

The incident near Adiala jail serves as a stark reminder of the persistent and evolving threat of terrorism faced by Pakistan.
