Lino Tomasen, dubbed the “Ironman” of Cuba, once dreamed to be a professional boxer. His unusual workout programme involved subjecting himself to millions of sledgehammer strikes.
Tomasen reflected on his boxing career, saying, “I had 27 matches won by knockout, but I retired because in the last of them, I fractured the skull (of my opponent) and he died instantly.”
As an act of penitence, he donated $100,000 to his opponent’s bereaved family. This gesture of charity, when viewed against the backdrop of Cuba’s economic situation, demonstrates his character.
From boxing rings to streets
