No Chinese citizens injured in attack on Chinese convoy in Pakistan

No Chinese citizens have been injured in the attack on a Chinese convoy in Pakistan.

On its route back to the port area from Gwadar Airport, a Chinese convoy from the projects in Gwadar Port in southwestern Pakistan was attacked by a roadside bomb and gunfire, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Consulate General in Karachi on Sunday.

According to the statement, no Chinese citizens were hurt in the attack.

The Consulate General strongly condemned the terrorist incident and urged Pakistan to bring the criminals to justice as well as take meaningful and effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, organizations, and projects.

“The Consulate General has immediately activated the emergency plan, reminding local Chinese citizens, enterprises, and projects to be vigilant, upgrade security measures, prevent security risks, pay close attention to the security situation, and ensure safety,” according to the statement.

As no Chinese citizens were injured in the attack on a Chinese convoy in Pakistan, meanwhile, China has invested extensively under its Belt and Road Initiative in the mineral-rich province of Balochistan, including the development of the deepwater port of Gwadar.

“Terrorists used small arms and hand grenades during the activity,” the military’s public relations wing said in a statement, adding that two militants were killed and no harm was caused to any military personnel or civilians.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming many casualties. However, no additional reports from the area corroborated similar deaths.

The BLA and other terrorist groups claim Pakistan exploits the province’s natural resources and has recently attacked Chinese interests as a result.

Gwadar is being constructed under Chinese administration and is located near the Strait of Hormuz, an important oil shipping route in the Arabian Sea.
