During rain in Delhi, the water level in Delhi’s swollen Yamuna increased even more, flooding homes, disrupting public transportation, and necessitating emergency measures.
Here are the 10 latest developments regarding Delhi rain:
- Yamuna’s water level was 208.62 metres at 1 o’clock today as water from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage continued to be released into the river. The water is currently three metres above the danger level.
- The Arvind Kejriwal administration had pleaded with the centre to intervene and stop the water discharge, but the centre had said that the barrage’s excess water needed to be released. Later in the day, the water discharge is anticipated to decrease.
- Due to extremely heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh further north, the Haryana barrage has filled up. In the hill state, the monsoon has wreaked widespread havoc by demolishing homes and destroying bridges.
- The upscale Civil Lines neighbourhood of the nation’s capital was underwater as river water seeped into the neighbourhood. The Delhi Assembly and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s home are only 350 metres away from the water.
- Traffic flow has been hampered by waterlogging on a number of roads, including sections of the busy Outer Ring Road. Alternate routes have been used to redirect traffic, causing severe congestion.
- Metro services have also been impacted, adding to the difficulties faced by those who use public transport. The Blue Line’s Yamuna Bank Metro station has been closed because the approach road is flooded. Although all lines continue to operate normally, trains are moving at a slower speed on Metro bridges.
- The Delhi Disaster Management Authority met, and the Chief Minister ordered that all schools and colleges be closed until Sunday. Government workers have been asked to work remotely, with the exception of those who provide emergency services. Additionally, private offices have been urged to switch to the WFH option.
- Water services in some parts of the national capital will be affected as three water treatment plans have been shut down. Chief Minister Kejriwal has said attempts will be made to normalise the water supply as soon as the waterlogging clears.
- Several teams of the National Disaster Response Force are on the ground, evacuating those whose homes have been flooded. Visuals showed people being rescued on boats from areas where water is flowing at chest level.
- The Chief Minister has sought citizens’ cooperation for evacuation. “Saving lives is most important. I appeal to all Delhiites to help each other in this emergency,” he tweeted.
