Profile: Rana Sanaullah – Age, Political Party and Education

Rana Sanaullah, a staunch supporter of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, served as Punjab Law Minister from 2013 to 2018. He is a close aide of the Sharif brothers.

Rana Sanaullah Khan, the son of Sher Muhammad Khan, was born on January 1, 1955, in Faisalabad, Punjab. He is descended from a Rajput family.

He is a practicing lawyer with a bachelor’s degree in business from Government College in Faisalabad and an LLB from the Punjab Law College in Lahore.

Sanaullah began his political career in his hometown of Faisalabad after completing his studies. He first joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), then the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Since 1990, he has been elected to the Punjab assembly four times, serving as deputy opposition leader and minister for law and legislative affairs.

Throughout his career, Sanaullah has been imprisoned numerous times for his staunch opposition to authoritarianism; nonetheless, he has always remained steady despite all circumstances, never compromising on his ideals.

Sanaullah continues to play a constructive role in the politics of Punjab.

One of the controversies surrounding his career was that Sanaullah termed Babar Awan as ‘Wajibul Qatal’ (liable to be killed) on account of corruption charges. This statement of his was condemned all over the country.

Rana Sanaullah was embroiled in a controversy in the Model Town firing case. The inquiry report prepared by Justice Ali Baqar Najfi implicitly pointed finger at the police and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, holding them responsible for the Model Town killings that could have been “easily avoided”.
