Elections to be held on February 8. President Arif Alvi and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja have reached a unanimous agreement to hold the country’s general elections on February 8, 2024.
This decision emerged following a crucial meeting between a delegation from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), led by CEC Raja, and Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan at the President’s Secretariat.
The meeting was convened in response to directives from the Supreme Court, which mandated the election commission to engage in consultations with the president and promptly inform the court about the selected poll date.
Initially, the ECP had informed the Supreme Court during a hearing that the elections were slated for February 11.
However, in light of the court’s request, the commission engaged in discussions with President Alvi.
After careful deliberation, both parties arrived at a consensus, fixing the general elections for Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Following this crucial agreement, Attorney General Awan and CEC Raja are scheduled to inform the Supreme Court about the finalized election date.
The Supreme Court had specifically instructed the Attorney General to facilitate the meeting between the ECP and President Alvi, provide the president with the court’s order, and remain available for any necessary assistance.
The Supreme Court has expressed anticipation that the matter concerning the election date will be promptly resolved, with the court expecting to be officially informed about this significant development on the following day, Friday.
As Elections to be held on February 8, this decision marks a crucial milestone in Pakistan’s democratic process, setting the stage for the upcoming general elections.
