What is Hypergamy:

Hypergamy, the practice of seeking a partner of higher social or economic status, has long intrigued society.

Popularized in cultural phenomena such as “The Real Housewives” and “Bridgerton,” this concept is deeply rooted in history, where strategic marriages were used to climb the social ladder.

Modern hypergamy often stems from desires for financial security, improved reputation, or enhanced self-worth.

Emma Hathorn, a dating and relationships expert at Seeking.com, notes that today’s romantic connections often revolve around shared intellectual and ambitious pursuits.

“Showcasing ambitions and offering a taste of luxury on dates sets a high standard for relationships,” Hathorn explains.

She adds that people seek to elevate their own status through engaging conversations and exclusive, tailored experiences.
