Indian man sues biscuit company for one missing biscuit, wins Rs100,000

Indian man sues biscuit company for one missing biscuit. A Tamil Nadu court in India has ordered the company to pay the customer INR 100,000 in damages because one of the biscuits in the packet was missing.

Indian media reported that when a person in Tamil Nadu opened a packet of biscuits from the renowned company, ITC Foods Limited, one biscuit was missing.

The person appeared before the court and requested INR 1 crore in damages, arguing that his credibility was damaged by cheating and that he made an illegal profit.

In response, the court called ITC Foods Limited representatives into court to provide an explanation for why the packet of “Sun Feast Marie Light” contained 15 biscuits rather than 16. The company will make millions if each packet of biscuits contains one less biscuit.

As an Indian man sues biscuit company for one missing biscuit, according to Business Today, “P Dillibabu of MMDA Mathur, a resident of Chennai, purchased two dozen ‘Sun Feast Marie Light’ biscuits in Manalito to feed stray animals in December 2021. When he opened the packet, he was surprised that there were only 15 biscuits instead of 16, and when he went back to the store for an explanation, they did not give him a proper response. Even when he approached ITC, there was no explanation regarding one missing biscuit.”

According to Business Today, the complainant noted that each biscuit costs 75 paise and that ITC Ltd produces close to 50 lakh packets per day, indicating that the company defrauded the public of over INR lakh every day.

Representatives of the food company said that this must have happened by mistake. The rep claimed that “biscuits are packed not by counting but by weighing,” however, the court rejected this argument.

The company was ordered to pay INR 1 lakh in customer damages and INR 10,000 in court costs after the court accepted the petitioner’s complaint.

In this way, one lost biscuit in the biscuit packet cost ITC Foods Limited a whopping six figures of one hundred thousand dollars.

The Petitioner commented, “I had claimed one crore as damages, but whatever the decision of the court is, I accept it.”
