Fact check: Is Umar Akmal joining PML-N?

Is Umar Akmal joining PML-N? On Friday, national cricketer Umar Akmal met former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at his London mansion, raising speculation that he may join the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N).

After the meeting, Akmal told the media that he had made a “special request” to the PML-N supremo, which he believed would be fulfilled.

“I am thankful to him [Nawaz Sharif] for taking out time for me. It’s an honor for me,” the cricketer said. He however did not disclose the nature of his request.

When questioned about the state of cricket in Pakistan, Akmal said it was fine and that it will improve if Nawaz Sharif returned.

He stated that his “fitness was good” and expressed his desire to play for Pakistan’s cricket squad.

Umer Akmal didn’t clarify whether he asked the PML-N supremo to add him to the party or not.

Under Article 4.7.1 of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, the Pakistan Cricket Board prohibited Akmal from playing cricket in 2020. He was later granted permission to play domestic cricket in 2021.

Last year, Pakistan’s all-rounder Faheem Ashraf also visited Nawaz at his home.

Faheem was picked to Pakistan’s team for the forthcoming Afghanistan series and Asia Cup, despite having not played an ODI since 2021.

Pakistan’s squad has arrived in Sri Lanka, where they will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Afghanistan on August 22, 24, and 26.

Umar Akmal is a Pakistani cricketer who represented his country between 2009 and 2019. The Pakistan Cricket Board suspended him for eighteen months for failing to disclose spot-fixing proposals until August 2021.
