There is no denying that Pakistan is a diverse country for tourism. Almighty Allah has bestowed Pakistan with unparalleled beauty. Pakistan’s diversity of landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historical places attract the attention of both international and local tourists. The diversity ranges from high peaked mountains and heavenly sights in the north, scenic beaches in Balochistan and Makran coast, alluvial plains of Punjab, and hot deserts in Sindh.
Pakistan has a wide heritage of culture that includes historical places, ancient civilizations, and different cultures. Popular cultural locations include Mohenjo-Daro, Taxila, Rohtas Fort, Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque, Shalimar Garden, and Shahi Qilla. Pakistan has also great potential for religious tourism not only for Muslims but also for Buddhism and Sikhism. Sikh pilgrims come to see Gurdwawa Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, there are Christian and Hindu holy sites as well. Pakistan is home to a stunning diversity of landscapes and historical sights.
Tourism is a dynamic and multifarious industry that plays a vital role in the economic development of nations. Pakistan has great tourism potential. It can drive and boost Pakistan’s economic growth by creating better job opportunities, generating revenue, and improving infrastructure.
According to a report countries like Switzerland and Thailand are generating USD 80 billion and Pakistan also has a potential of generating USD 40 billion. But unfortunately, Pakistan has failed to cash its potential in tourism. The question is why we are unable to tap this huge potential.
Pakistan is facing many challenges in the tourism industry due to weak policy and decision-making. Some of the notable challenges and flaws are discussed below:
1. The biggest challenge being faced by the country is the security issue. After 9/11 and several terrorist incidents in the past have deterred tourists around the world. Tourists from around the world are reluctant to visit Pakistan. Although the security situation has improved a lot still there is a lot to do.
2. Insufficient amenities and lack of infrastructure are also creating challenges. Many tourist locations are in remote areas and the limited road network makes it difficult to travel there. Also, limited hotels and guest houses and a shortage of services discourage tourists.
3. Pakistan has been facing political instability since its very birth. The economy of Pakistan is struggling greatly due to political instability. It is also creating challenges for tourism as it creates an unstable environment.
4. The infrastructure and amenities provided by this industry necessitate a significant investment in the growth. However, the tourism industry has long been neglected by the government. This is because the tourist industry receives small funding each fiscal year.
5. Despite having great tourism potential, policies and the planning process did not incorporate the anticipated strategy for promotion and marketing. The country is unable to emerge as a prominent tourist destination.
6. In the absence of professional tour operators, local communities and companies that rely on tourism may miss out on economic prospects. Tour operators can assist in more equitably divided visitor spending and promoting local economies.
Tourism can be a game changer in Pakistan’s economy if better policies are made government makes an effort regarding the future of tourism in Pakistan. Following are some suggestions regarding the improvement of the tourism industry:
1. The government should make an effort to provide a safe environment for tourists. Through effective communication, the government should continue to invest in security measures and seek to improve the bad reputation of Pakistan as a secure destination.
2. Improvements to the infrastructure are necessary to facilitate tourism. Government should invest in transit networks, roads, airports, and hotels, particularly in remote and inaccessible places.
3. The government should make efforts to promote tourism through a robust marketing strategy to attract international tourists.
4. Allowing the private sector to promote tourist attractions. The private sector can develop and operate tourism facilities and services for visitors while maximizing financial returns.
5. Pakistan’s government should make every effort to boost tourism. For example, easing visa procedures for visitors and making travel easy for them by providing appropriate tourist guides.
6. E-visa system and visa-on-arrival options can be explored to facilitate tourism.
7. The role of media is very crucial in promoting tourism. Social media marketing is an effective way to increase brand awareness. By creating and maintaining an active social media presence, tour operators can reach a wider audience and increase their visibility in the market.
Tourism in Pakistan has great potential and can boost Pakistan’s economy. Tourism is not only important to increase revenue but it is also a soft power that can lead to success in world politics. Ig government makes an effort and shape better policies than Pakistan can compete with the world’s biggest tourist destinations.
